My name is Jim Olsen. I'm a retired teacher - regular and special ed. I’ve worked with students of all ages. For years I've wanted to share, beyond my workshops, some of the ideas I've come across or developed. So here goes! Most of these thoughts are lower-tech or older-tech. If you like at least 1 or 2 of these ideas, and want to use them, I'm pleased! Please let me know!

A Fun, Safe, NATURAL way to view the eclipse on September 22.

Don’t look up at the sun. Look down!

YOU DON'T NEED GLASSES OR ANY OTHER EQUIPMENT.

On September 22, people in Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana can see an ECLIPSE of the sun. The moon will go in front of the sun. For some people, the moon will go all the way in front of the sun, and they will see a beautiful ring.

DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN!
Looking at the sun can hurt your eyes! Here is a SAFE way to see it the sun:

On sunny days before the eclipse, look for places where the sun is shining through trees. Look for ROUND PICTURES OF THE SUN on the ground, on streets, on cars, on buildings. Some are small, some are large. You can hold a sheet of white paper to see it brighter. Hold a piece of paper near a bush a tree. Look for circles. Make holes in a piece of paper. Shine the sun through the paper to another piece of paper. You can also put one hand over the other, and shine the sun through. On ECLIPSE DAY, instead of circles, there will be crescents! Some people will see crescents, then rings.

Below, this is the gym of my old elementary school. The other picture shows sun circles on my niece’s car.

REMEMBER, don’t look directly at the sun. Try this safe, natural method.

Here’s a challenge for people who like math:
If you know the diameter of the circle on the ground or building, what is the distance to the hole in a tree that is projecting it? How do we know?

Email me about that or with questions or comments or for more information at olsenjim@yahoo.com.
